Two-Day Oil Painting Workshop with Ed Hicks -- Discover alkyds
-- just like oils, but much faster drying. Workshop included demonstrations, personal assistance, and group critiques. For complete information, see the flyer.

Carolyn Emerson writes: "The workshop was very successful - everyone enjoyed Ed Hicks and learned a lot about alkyds, and general art principals such as composition, focus, shape sizes and placement. It was especially nice not to have to bring anything other than an easel and ourselves. We will be bringing our paintings to the Wednesday meeting for members to view." From the minutes of November 18, 2015 member meeting: "A review of the auction showed 46 pieces up for bid, 34 sold. Of the 34, 14 went to MAA members and 20 to guests. Some artwork sold for the opening bid of $50 while a couple went as high as $125. It was a fun, successful evening and a hearty thanks to all who lent support to the effort."

Member Meeting -- November 18, 2015

Artist Jane Penfield demonstrated pastel painting. She showed us how to paint an underpainting using three values of dark, medium and light to add depth and interest to a snow scene. "What is under what you see on the surface is what is interesting," she said.

She photos of Jane's process and the finished painting below.

Jane also showed us a series of snow paintings (below) which demonstred different light.

The purple, violet and pink underpainting fixed with alcohol.

Moving on to the next set

Despite blazing sun and pouring rain,
it was a beautiful afternoon for art and music!

See photos below.

The afternoon included the presentation of our scholarship to graduating high school senior and new MAA member Tori-Marie Lauria. She will be studying art at UCONN in the fall. We enjoyed meeting Tori and were very impressed by her artwork, including her self portrait (right), sculpture (left), and drawing.

Friends, family and guests enjoyed flowers and food provided by the artists of MAA.

Several members also had tables set up to sell their artwork.

Member Pat Ballsieper and new member Rebecca McMann

The Quiet Corner Fiddlers faced some challenges with the weather, but kept on playing outside, and then inside.

Thank you, Fiddlers! We very much enjoyed your wonderful, toe tapping music!
