Pastel workshop with Laura Kinlock
Using Dark Paper with Pastels
When: Saturday, April 15, 2023, 9 AM - 4 PM
Where: Manchester Church of Christ, Fellowship Hall
595 Tolland Turnpike, Manchester CT
Cost: $50/per person (Limit of 14 people)
All levels. A good class for beginners and experienced painters alike. In this one-day workshop you will learn both how to make and to use a dark surface for creating a pastel painting. There is no need to go out and buy dark paper, or colored paper for that matter when you can create your own simply and economically. This workshop is geared toward the intermediate pastellist. Beginners are welcome also if they are open to trying something new and willing to be patient with themselves…..learning pastels is a process!
Using a dark surface to start with can create a lot of depth and drama in a painting when used to its best advantage. You can do both night scenes and day scenes using this technique. We will work from our own reference photos to create our scenes. I will also have some reference photos of my own on hand if needed. I will demo both creating the surface itself and then painting on it. I will also have a brief discussion about other papers and surfaces you can use, as well as creating some texture on a surface, which is also a fun technique to use.
The afternoon will be devoted to you working on your own painting. I encourage you to bring two pieces of paper and two references, as those who work more quickly will have time to start a second piece.
